Session 2 of “The Sunless Citadel” begins with the adventurers in a hallway within the citadel, having previously dealt with water mephits.
The session quickly focuses on a door from which grumbling can be heard. Upon opening it, they find a room with crude symbols, a pit, a cage, and a crying kobold named Meepo. Meepo is distraught because the goblins stole his clan's dragon, Calcryx. He identifies the goblins as the thieves and speaks of his clan's reverence for dragons.
The adventurers inquire about the missing children they are searching for, but Meepo claims he hasn't seen them. Despite his emotional state, the adventurers believe he is likely telling the truth about the dragon. They learn that the kobold clan is still present in the citadel but are unhappy with Meepo.
Meepo offers to take the party to Yusdrayl, the kobold leader, if they promise to “make nice” and rescue the dragon. He suggests that Yusdrayl might know more about the missing children. The adventurers agree to help retrieve the dragon.
Meepo leads them to the kobold living quarters, a large chamber with around 24 kobolds. They are presented to Queen Yusdrayl, who confirms that the goblins stole their dragon. She explains that the citadel is divided between the kobolds and goblins, and mentions an outcast who helps the goblins by growing fruit. The adventurers also overhear a conversation about the goblins offering fruit in different seasons.
Yusdrayl promises a reward for the dragon's return and allows Meepo to accompany them to calm the dragon. She confirms that the missing adventurers went to fight the goblins and never returned. Yusdrayl offers items from the altar as a reward, though she doesn't expect it to be very significant. She gives a key to a guard to lead the party to the goblin territory, with Meepo also going along.
Meepo leads them through a corridor, pointing out a trap. They reach a locked door, which the rogue, Anna, manages to unlock. They proceed down an L-shaped corridor and investigate more doors. They hear noises behind one door and detect a stench of garbage and rotting meat.
Upon opening this door, they encounter three goblins, initiating combat. The adventurers defeat two goblins and manage to intimidate the third. They interrogate the surviving goblin, learning that there are at least 20-30 goblins around and that the dragon is locked in another room. The goblin refuses to help further, fearing retribution from his clan, and is ultimately killed in the ensuing fight.
After the combat, the party takes a short rest in the goblin living quarters, barricading the door with goblin bodies. They then explore a 20-foot wide corridor with dragon carvings. They investigate several doors, hearing goblin voices behind one and finding a pantry behind another containing oil and “elf pudding”.
They eventually open a door and find another goblin living quarters, leading to another combat with goblins. They defeat these goblins as well, finding some silver pieces.
Continuing their search, they open a door and find a room full of stuffed animal heads, evidence of a rampage, frost on the walls, and the small white dragon, Calcryx, asleep. Meepo excitedly rushes towards the dragon, but it wakes up and kills Meepo.
Combat ensues with Calcryx. The adventurers, after a difficult fight during which they discuss subduing the dragon rather than killing it, eventually manage to stabilize and tie up the young dragon.
They decide to return the subdued Calcryx to the kobolds. Upon returning, Yusdrayl and the other kobolds are saddened by Meepo's death but consider it a necessary sacrifice. Yusdrayl rewards the adventurers with several magical items from the altar, including three elixirs of health, a claws feather token, a scroll of knock, a scroll of mage armor, and a scroll of spider climbing, as well as a bone scroll case.
The session ends after the exchange with Yusdrayl.
