A Secret In The Sewers

(TIW) Session 3 – A Secret In The Sewers

Session 3 picked up immediately after the end of Session 2, with the party having discovered that bodies were being dumped into a sewer grate in the Copper District. The session began with some discussion of technical setup and player character adjustments. The party then prepared to enter the sewer to investigate what was happening to the bodies.

Upon entering the sewer, the party found it to be very dark. They overheard a conversation between individuals underground, involving talk of House Blackwood, needing more silver, and referencing three dead members of their clan.

This led to a combat encounter in the sewer. The party faced off against these individuals, which included half-orcs, a human, and eventually some animated dead like zombies. The fight involved the use of spells like dissonant whispers, attempts to maneuver enemies using shoves and grappling, and abilities like reckless attack and rage. One party member was subjected to spells causing blindness/deafness and paralysis. The party successfully defeated their opponents. After the combat, the party discussed looting the bodies and decided to return to the Copper District Council member, Sandor Lachman.

The party found Sandor at the meeting hall for the Copper District City Council and spoke with him privately. They reported their findings, informing him about the bodies being dumped in the sewer. They also recounted their earlier experience at the bakery, mentioning the suspicious individuals they encountered (the three or four who brought in barrels), finding contaminated grain being mixed with the normal supply, and taking a sample of the suspicious grain. They reminded Sandor that the Blackwood logo was seen on the barrels containing the potentially poisoned grain.

Sandor examined the vial containing the sample and noted that the grain looked “a little funny”. Upon hearing about the panic of one of the individuals when the substance got on them, he became very cautious with the vial. Sandor stated he would get someone to analyze the sample. He reacted with shock upon being informed by an assistant about the three bodies found dead in the bakery that morning. He asked the party if they knew anything about the “crime scene,” but they maintained they only took the sample and left before anything happened.

Sandor asked the party to keep their findings “hush hushed” and offered a reward for any concrete evidence about who might be behind the poisoning. He also asked them to investigate what was happening to the dead bodies, mentioning that plague carts were supposed to take bodies to the Temple of Mysteria for cremation, but none had arrived. He had attempted to follow a cart himself but lost it in the streets. Sandor stressed the need for discretion and advised the party to “trust no one,” specifically implying they should not ask Lieutenant Dan directly about the missing bodies.

Before the session concluded, Sandor provided information about the Blackwood family members involved in the relief efforts: Mora (whose name is on the flyer for the daily reward), Ander (who is being promoted as the new heir and is also heading relief efforts), Lady Webster (described as very cold, formal, and “old money”), and Bram (who was involved but disappeared for a week and recently returned).

The session ended with the party having shared their initial findings with Sandor and receiving further instructions to discreetly investigate the fate of the dead bodies. They were told to return tomorrow for payment and possibly a new mission. There was a brief, humorous interlude about character sheets and technical issues before the game concluded for the night.
